The government has commenced restoration works on the Rasfannu Beach breakwater, marking the start of a broader effort to rehabilitate a key section of coastal infrastructure in Malé.

The public waterfront was officially closed on 9 April to facilitate structural reinforcement works. The project forms part of a wider revitalisation initiative, with MTCC aiming to complete the maintenance phase on an expedited schedule for the benefit of residents.

Originally inaugurated in 2016, the waterfront was developed under the Ministry of Housing during the tenure of Mohamed Muizzu as housing minister. The site was designed as a public recreational space featuring hammock seating and facilities for fishers and families. However, limited maintenance over time has resulted in visible deterioration of the area’s infrastructure.

Following a presidential directive issued in February 2025 to upgrade the site beyond its original standard, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has implemented the project through a partnership between MTCC and the Malé Water and Sewerage Company.

Under the project, MTCC is responsible for coastal protection works and breakwater modifications aimed at improving water circulation, with a new drainage system already completed. The Malé Water and Sewerage Company is overseeing the development of upgraded public amenities, including restroom facilities, showers and lockers.

The government aims to restore Rasfannu as a resilient and functional public space for residents of the capital through the coordinated implementation of these works.
