The current administration addressed the issue of the imprisonment of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, asserting that the government’s role in his release is limited, and the matter now rests with the country’s judiciary, in a press conference held today.

Yameen, who served as the Maldivian leader from 2013 to 2018, received an 11-year prison sentence on charges of money laundering and bribery related to the sale of V. Aarah on December 26, 2022.

During the press conference, Shaheeb emphasised that, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s inaugural address in November, the government does not exert any influence over the judiciary.

He stated that Yameen’s freedom is now solely within the jurisdiction of the judiciary, and the government will refrain from exerting any influence in the matter.

Yameen was moved from Maafushi Prison to his residence in Male’ City on October 1, the day after President Muizzu won the presidential election runoff. Subsequently, the Maldives Correctional Service adjusted the terms of his home confinement, allowing him to leave the house for exercise and other activities.

Despite warnings from the Correctional Service, Yameen visited his party office multiple times and requested permission for political activities, which was denied due to legal restrictions on convicts engaging in political endeavors.
