The government has confirmed that India will be recalling its military personnel stationed in three locations within the Maldives to oversee the operation of three medevac and emergency response aircraft gifted to the country.
According to a senior government official, India will be deploying civilian personnel to assume responsibility for these flights, which were previously conducted by the military.
The official stated that while Maldives will continue to utilise the three aircraft provided by India, it is imperative that they are operated by civilians rather than military personnel.
Following the recent High Level Core Group meeting between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement outlining the agreement reached.
“Both parties have reached an agreement wherein the Government of India will begin replacing military personnel at one of the three aviation platforms by 10th March 2024, with the process completed for the remaining two platforms by 10th May 2024,” the statement declared.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed during a press conference today that the Indian military presence in the Maldives will be supplanted by proficient technical experts from India.
