Yameen, speaking at a People’s National Front (PNF) rally, asserted that such a move would constitute a significant economic crime. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Maldives as a crucial trade route for goods traveling between the East and West, passing through channels such as Ihavandhippolhu in the North and the Addu channel in the South.
Yameen accused the government of extending foreign land leases in Thilafushi for 99 years, purportedly with the aim of granting ownership of the port to Dubai Ports World. He warned of adverse consequences for the Maldives if such a decision was to materialise.
Yameen further claimed that during his tenure, Dubai Ports World had expressed interest in acquiring the Thilafushi port, but he had declined the offer, believing in the potential for local development. He cautioned against the potential loss of benefits if the port were to be controlled by an external party.
Yameen emphasised the importance of open discussions and transparency in such matters, urging incumbent Presidents to involve the public in decision-making processes.
However, the government maintains its stance that there are no plans to privatize the Thilafushi port or hand it over to a foreign entity, affirming its commitment to the economic interests and sovereignty of the Maldives.
