Maldives acknowledged the necessity of these facilities, and discussions on their continued operation are yet to be concluded. A senior Indian official informed Reuters that the decision on the way forward would be made during the discussions of the core group formed by the two countries.

The Muizzu campaign disclosed that there are thousands of Indian troops in Maldives, with 77 stationed since the President took office. These troops operate the helicopters and Dornier aircraft, as asserted by the previous government.

An official speaking to The Print highlighted that both Maldives and India disclosed the importance of Indian resources, considering them a vital aspect of the bilateral relations. Maldives also expressed the significance of maintaining the use of these facilities, recognising them as symbolic of the Maldives-India relationship.

Discussions, as reported by The Hindhustan Times, specifically focused on the continuity of India’s two helicopters and Dornier aircraft in Maldives. An official noted that while the talks were brief, both countries acknowledged the facilities as crucial to their relationship.

Muizzu reiterated his pledge to withdraw Indian troops within the first 100 days of his administration. He expressed confidence that the withdrawal would occur soon through the democratic process, with a specific date to be determined after further committee discussions.
