The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has denied rumours circulating on social media that terminals at Velana International Airport (VIA) are to be handed over to foreign parties.

MACL, which is responsible for operating VIA, issued the clarification following claims that the airport’s VIP terminal would be leased to a foreign company under a long-term agreement.

MACL revealed to local media that suggestions the VIP terminal at Velana International Airport would be handed over to a Dubai-based company were untrue. The government has not decided to transfer the operation of any terminal at VIA to any foreign entity, MACL explained.

It is noted that MACL regularly receives project proposals from various companies and confirmed that a proposal had also been submitted by a Dubai-based firm. However, no decision has been made on this proposal, and any future decision would prioritise the best interests of the company and the country.

Similar rumours have emerged on social media suggesting that the government intends to hand over the operation of Hanimaadhoo International Airport to foreign parties. However, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has confirmed that the government has not made any such decision.
