The government has reiterated its directive for cafes and takeaway shops to refrain from placing tables and chairs on the pavements of Hulhumalé streets.

In a statement, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) expressed concerns about cafes and takeaway shops across Hulhumalé using pavements for outdoor seating. According to the HDC, this practice has led to public disturbances and inconveniences.

HDC pointed out that businesses operating with tables and chairs on pavements and in empty hedge areas have created multiple issues. A notable concern is the presence of customers smoking near these seating areas, particularly in proximity to schools, which poses challenges for pedestrians.

The HDC emphasised that conducting business in this manner is not permitted and has instructed businesses to remove the tables and chairs from the pavements. The statement also indicated that action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the notice.
