Gov’t Expands Sea-to-Air Cargo Services with Emirates Collaboration
The government has announced a partnership with Emirates to enhance its sea-to-air cargo services.

This initiative, launched in collaboration with Maldives State Shipping (MSS) and various global airlines, facilitates the import of goods from abroad and their subsequent re-export to multiple destinations. Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways have also joined this initiative to expand service offerings.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Emirates has recently dispatched 12 Unit Load Devices (ULD) containing goods from Milan, Italy. Emirates will operate flights between the Maldives and Dubai, thus connecting the archipelago with several European countries.
MPL introduced its sea-to-air cargo services in March, with the first shipment occurring in May. This inaugural shipment comprised garments sourced from Bangladesh, which were transported to Germany via Turkish Airlines.
The sea-to-air transshipment service aims to reduce the time involved in maritime shipping and provide timely support to the commercial sector. This hybrid model seeks to efficiently meet the demands of the industry. One of the primary advantages for the Maldives from this service is the anticipated increase in flight availability to various destinations, particularly in Europe, which is expected to expedite the export process and enhance trade opportunities.
