The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has outlined efforts to tackle transboundary air pollution, following warnings from Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) of deteriorating air quality and haze expected to persist for the next five days.

In a press release, the ministry called the seasonal haze conditions a national priority, noting their significant impact on public health, environmental quality, and economic sustainability.

“The Government of Maldives considers seasonal haze conditions a national priority due to their effect on public health, community wellbeing, and the tourism-dependent economy. The situation reflects broader transboundary atmospheric conditions across South Asia, where seasonal winds and regional emissions contribute to the transport of air pollutants,” the ministry said.

It added that the Maldives’ geographic characteristics and dense population make the country particularly vulnerable to environmental changes originating beyond its borders.

The ministry said it is working to strengthen international efforts through scientific collaboration, data sharing, and sustained dialogue, while continuing engagement with regional and global partners to mitigate current impacts and develop long-term solutions for improved air quality and environmental resilience.
