The surge in public littering cases, particularly noticeable in the lead-up to Ramadan, has prompted concerns among residents. Reports indicate a rise in the improper disposal of various items such as old furniture, wood piles, and general waste, often left strewn along roadsides and in alleys.

Responding to the growing dissatisfaction among members of the public, Male’ City Council revealed on Thursday that they have initiated a crackdown on litterers. The authority disclosed that its Community Engagement Unit, in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, has commenced summoning and penalizing offenders.

Male’ City Mayor, Adam Azim, highlighted the substantial efforts undertaken by the council to address the issue, stating that a staggering 305.65 tons of waste have been cleared from the city in the past 18 days alone. Furthermore, he revealed that an additional 42 tons of waste were disposed of on Wednesday, underscoring the ongoing commitment to cleanliness.

In light of these developments, the council issued a stern reminder to the public, urging them to uphold the cleanliness of the city and its public spaces. This call to action underscores the collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and hygienic environment for all residents.
