The government of the Maldives has announced a ban on vehicular traffic on the roads of Malé City on Friday evening between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to accommodate a parade commemorating the country’s 59th Independence Day.

According to a statement by the Malé City Council, the parade will feature the Maldives National Cadet Corps (MNCC) and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The council noted that managing traffic flow during the event would be challenging, necessitating the temporary vehicle ban.

Initially, the parade was scheduled for 26th July, the official Independence Day of the Maldives. However, adverse weather conditions led to its postponement to the upcoming Friday. The vehicle ban was also imposed last Friday but was lifted following the parade’s cancellation.

This year, Independence Day celebrations have been significantly scaled back due to the country’s current economic situation.
