The government, through the national health scheme, Aasandha, has launched a medical checkup program for individuals aged 50 and above, conducted twice annually.
This initiative is designed to offer free medical examinations to the citizens of the Maldives, with a focus on early detection and treatment of major diseases.
Heena Waleed, CEO of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), outlined the program’s goals during a press conference, emphasising early disease detection, the promotion of healthy living, and the cultivation of a generation well-versed in disease prevention.
Aminath Zeeniya, Managing Director of Aasandha, confirmed that the medical checkup service, developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, will kick off on January 1 for individuals aged 50 and above. The service will gradually extend to those aged 35 to 49 and children under 19 starting from April 1, 2024, and individuals aged 19 to 34 from July 1, 2024.
Following the initial checkup, individuals recommended for a second examination by their doctors can avail the service six months later. The packages are tailored to identify non-communicable or major diseases requiring long-term treatment, following professional guidance and periodic reviews.
IGMH to Create New Section with Dedicated Lab for Medical Checkups
Aminath Zeeniya also revealed that the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is set to establish a new section, featuring a dedicated laboratory for medical checkups.
Zeeniya also said that the new section would not only incorporate a separate lab system but also include a designated room for electrocardiograms (ECG). Emphasising the convenience factor, she mentioned that the queue system for medical checkups would be distinct from those for other medical consultations.
This service is accessible at health centers in islands, regional hospitals, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumale’ Hospital, and Villimale Hospital. Interested individuals can register for a medical checkup by contacting the respective healthcare facilities.
