Gov’t Initiates Reforms to Extend Retirement Age
The government has initiated efforts to reform laws to extend the official retirement age from 65 to 75 years.
This reform, a key electoral pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aims to allow public office employees aged 65 or above to retain their positions until they reach the new retirement age.
In a statement, the government announced that various agencies, security forces, and independent institutions are involved in the legal reform process. Discussions, led by the Ministry of Higher Education, are underway to assess existing retirement policies and gather feedback on the first draft of the proposed legislation.
The Ministry of Higher Education is spearheading these efforts under the guidance of President Muizzu. The government has confirmed that the draft bill will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office for review within a month.
During his presidential campaign, President Muizzu advocated for a system that would allow employees over 65 to continue working on renewable annual contracts until the age of 75, marking a significant shift in employment policy for older workers in public service.
