The government-led initiative, “Ijuthimaaee Badhahi Madhadhuverin” (Ibama), has been launched in Meemu Atoll with plans to expand to all inhabited islands nationwide.

The Ministry of Social and Family Development has initiated training programmes for Ibama, starting in Meemu Atoll. These sessions begin a revamped programme framework, emphasising a strengthened approach to social security.

A three-day training programme in Muli, Meemu Atoll, drew 34 participants from six islands within the atoll. The programme outlined the purpose of Ibama groups, detailed the responsibilities and roles of members, and highlighted key considerations for providing social security services. Participants also learned to assess vulnerable populations and devise strategic interventions to enhance their living conditions.

Following the training, the Ibama team in Muli and newly trained members will visit vulnerable households across the islands to initiate comprehensive assistance plans. Fieldwork is slated to commence in six Meemu Atoll islands within the week.

A dedicated department within the Ministry of Social and Family Development oversees Ibama. This department facilitates establishing Ibama groups, monitors their activities, and provides necessary support. Efforts are also underway to establish databases encompassing resources and services on all islands.

Currently, the Ibama programme operates in the islands of 12 atolls and three cities across the Maldives.
