Gov’t Moves Stray Cats to Olhu Hiya Pet Care Facility

MV+ News Desk | March 2, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has confirmed that some stray cats have been relocated to the Olhu Hiya pet care facility as part of efforts to address the issue of stray animals in the city.

Olhu Hiya, inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in November last year, was initially managed by the city council. However, in mid-December, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare directed the council to halt the transfer of animals to the facility, citing concerns about the arrangements. The ministry also ordered the premises to be handed over to its administration.

Following the takeover, the ministry established a new quarantine area within 16 hours. So far, fifteen cats have been relocated to the facility. The relocation efforts were carried out by a task force with support from animal welfare organisations.

Olhu Hiya forms part of the government’s broader initiatives to manage the increasing number of stray cats in the city. The project aims to implement pet care regulations in the Maldives and includes modern shelters and treatment facilities for animals.
