The Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has stated that the shortage of administrative staff in council offices serving small island populations is becoming an increasing concern, with efforts now underway to address the issue.

In a statement shared on social media, the Minister indicated that councils in smaller communities, particularly those experiencing growth in tourism and other economic activities, are facing mounting challenges in recruiting and retaining administrative personnel.

He noted that discussions are ongoing with relevant institutions to identify a sustainable solution to the staffing shortage. The government is currently implementing several initiatives aimed at resolving challenges faced by island councils.

In addition to tackling recruitment difficulties, the government is working to address space limitations and infrastructure constraints affecting council offices. These measures include the redevelopment of damaged council buildings and efforts to strengthen the decentralisation framework to enable councils to deliver essential services more effectively to residents.
