Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham, has stated that the government has visited and gathered information from more than 14,000 households under its ongoing ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ social assessment programme.
Launched in May last year, the initiative involves visiting residents across all islands to assess their well-being, identify individuals in need, and provide essential support services. The programme began in Hulhumalé and forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to build a compassionate society and strengthen trust between the state and the public.
One of the key findings emerging from the initiative is the limited availability of employment opportunities, which has been highlighted as a pressing concern among many communities. In response, the government is working with employers and state-owned companies to address barriers to employment.
The programme has also revealed the specific challenges faced by single mothers, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. To support those who care for vulnerable individuals, the government has launched a training programme aimed at equipping caregivers with the necessary skills and knowledge.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development is implementing the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme in collaboration with public service institutions, relevant government agencies, atoll and island councils, as well as Women’s Development Committees. The ministry aims to reach every household in the country within a year to ensure that those requiring special assistance are identified and supported appropriately.
