The government has opened a public feedback period for the newly revised Hulhumalé masterplan, which introduces significant changes to the development of the reclaimed island.
The opportunity for public input began yesterday, and will remain open until 16 June. Feedback can be submitted online via the corporation’s official website.
The updated masterplan was launched by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a dedicated ceremony held on Tuesday. According to Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the final version of the plan will be shaped by the feedback received from the public during this consultation period.
HDC Managing Director Mauroof Jameel stated that the revised masterplan is designed to enhance the quality of life for Hulhumalé residents through the introduction of new facilities and improved infrastructure. He emphasised that HDC remains committed to incorporating public input as development continues.
Among the major changes outlined in the new plan is the expansion of the current Hulhumalé harbour, which will increase from 36 hectares to 53 hectares. The expansion will include the addition of modern facilities, upgraded equipment, and a larger passenger terminal.
The plan also allocates space for new schools, mosques, office buildings, and other essential infrastructure to support a growing population. HDC noted that the previous masterplan was projected to generate 131,000 employment opportunities. The revised version is expected to add a further 93,000 jobs, bringing the total to 224,000.
President Muizzu described the vision for Hulhumalé as one that positions the island to become a future financial capital, highlighting its strategic development as a key national priority.
