Gov’t Orders Suspension of Private Parking Allocations in Malé

MV+ News Desk | September 24, 2024

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has instructed Malé City Council to halt the allocation of private parking spaces on the streets of the capital with immediate effect.

In a statement, the Ministry cited the increasing scarcity of space on Malé’s roads, noting that even public parking areas have become limited. The Ministry emphasised the challenges residents face in finding temporary parking, adding that the suspension aims to ensure fair access to road space for all members of the public.

As part of this directive, the Ministry has also prohibited the renewal of any existing leases for parking spaces. This decision has been formally communicated to the City Council.

Previously, Malé City Council had announced plans to lease 450 parking spots across designated areas in the city. Following the submission of nearly 1,000 applications for these spots, the Council conducted a draw to select successful applicants.
