The Maldivian government has selected 50 pilgrims to perform Hajj with government funds today.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, they were chosen through a draw from 302 eligible candidates, all registered as people living below the poverty line with the Maldives Zakat House. The draw also selected an additional ten individuals to serve as backups in case any of the original 50 pilgrims could not attend.
The selection process was based on a list reviewed by the Maldives Zakat House in December of the previous year. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had pledged to send 1,000 low-income individuals on Hajj during his first term in office, funded by the state. Last year, the government sent 50 underprivileged people to perform Hajj.
