The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has said the government will work closely with fishermen to address their concerns and deliver tangible results.
The remarks were made during an interview with the media following discussions with fishermen, during which issues related to yellowfin tuna fishing were raised.
The Minister stated that fishermen are fully cooperating with the government, which he said has made it easier to identify challenges and work towards solutions. He added that the government remains committed to attending to the needs of fishermen and safeguarding their interests, in line with pledges outlined in President Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto.
Among the key concerns highlighted were delays in payments for fish purchased by private companies and the lack of access to affordable fuel for fishing operations.
The Minister outlined measures being pursued by the government to address these issues, including the construction of fish processing facilities to enable the direct purchase of fish from fishermen. He also said that affordable fuel stations are planned to be established in every atoll by March next year to support fishing activities.
