Gov’t Postpones Ban on Small Plastic Water Bottles to Later Next Year

The government has decided to defer the implementation date for the prohibition of importing and manufacturing plastic water bottles of 1 litre or less, prohibited from import and manufacture in the Maldives from August 1, 2024 and sale from the market starting November 1, 2024.
The decision comes following a decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, revising the list of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) identified as detrimental to the environment.
The presidential decree highlights 14 specific SUP items, encompassing both plastic items and those produced with plastic, that are deemed harmful to the environment. The document outlines the dates on which the import, manufacture, and sale of these items will be prohibited.
As a result of the decree, the date for the prohibition of the 13th item on the list has been modified. Plastic water bottles of 1 liter or less are now scheduled to be prohibited from import and manufacture in the Maldives from August 1, 2024. Following this, the items will be banned from the market starting November 1, 2024.
The issuance of this decree marks the repeal of previous regulations governing environmentally harmful SUPs, including their definition and the regulations surrounding their manufacture, import, and marketing in the Maldives.
