President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled plans to introduce an additional financial allowance for special educational needs (SEN) teachers, in response to mounting concerns over a shortage of adequately trained educators in the field.

During a session on the interactive Q&A platform ‘Raeesge Javaab’, Aishath Shaufa, a SEN teacher at M. Mulaku School, voiced apprehension regarding the scarcity of trained SEN teachers. She also petitioned the president to reinstate the previously provided risk allowance for such educators.

Muizzu acknowledged that the risk allowance had been discontinued following the implementation of a new pay framework by the preceding administration.

Addressing the issue of insufficiently trained SEN teachers, President Muizzu reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to prioritise the training of educators in this specialised field. He disclosed plans for a forthcoming mid-year programme aimed at equipping teachers with the necessary skills, particularly in areas facing shortages like SEN.

The adjustments made to the pay structure for education development professionals during the previous administration were highlighted, revealing that the remuneration for the lowest-ranking teachers now exceeds MVR 20,000, while their highest-ranking counterparts receive MVR 32,218.
