Gov’t Proposes Registration-Free Distribution of Ramadan Staple Foods

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has announced plans to facilitate the distribution of staple foods donated by the government in conjunction with Ramadan, without the need for registration.

Addressing concerns raised by many Male’ residents regarding the registration requirement to receive staple foods, Minister Adam Shareef assured that arrangements will be made for households in Male’ to access the items without the necessity of registration.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled the decision to distribute 10 kilograms of rice and flour to all households for the upcoming Ramadan during a press briefing at Velana International Airport, following the conclusion of his state visit to China.

Speaking to the press, Muizzu outlined his administration’s efforts to reduce the Maldives’ reliance on a single country for essential commodities such as rice, sugar, and flour. He highlighted ongoing negotiations with Turkey, revealing that the first shipment has been ordered as part of diversifying the sources of essential commodities.

The initiatives announced by Minister Adam Shareef Umar and President Mohamed Muizzu reflect the government’s proactive approach to address concerns and enhance food security measures for the Maldivian population.
