President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to extend the maximum age of employment from 65 to 75 years, during his first presidential address, today.
Muizzu emphasised the importance of harnessing the experience and wisdom of older citizens, stating that the current retirement age of 65 often leaves individuals with valuable skills facing a difficult transition into retirement.
“The government recognises the need to support those who wish to continue contributing to society beyond the age of 65,” Muizzu remarked. “We are committed to providing opportunities for employment and service until the age of 75.”
To facilitate this initiative, the government intends to establish a register specifically for older citizens and will inaugurate special social centres tailored to their needs. The first centre is set to open in Male’ this month, with plans for additional centres across the country.
Muizzu also announced plans for the establishment of aged care facilities in three regions outside of Male’. These developments mark a significant shift in employment policies, aiming to utilise the talents and experiences of older individuals while addressing their specific social and healthcare needs.
