Ministry of Higher Education Labour and Skills Development has assured that the government will not abandon students studying both in the Maldives and abroad with funding from government schemes.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted an emergency motion to parliament, alleging that the government had failed to pay students’ fees under the government loan schemes on time. However, the motion was rejected.

The Ministry highlighted that a total of 2,163 students are studying with government funding, both domestically and internationally. It emphasised that efforts are always made to deposit students’ course fees, living allowances, and other expenses promptly, as per stipulated regulations.

Despite these assurances, the Ministry acknowledged occasional delays in fund disbursement. These delays were attributed to the late receipt of required documents and the time needed to confirm students’ continued enrolment at their respective institutions.

The Ministry stated, “As things are this way, we are also working on automating such services which the Ministry needs to provide for students and expedite the process of verification of whether students are continuing their studies in order to increase the efficiency of services provided to students.”

Additionally, the Ministry assured that the government would undertake all necessary efforts to ensure the uninterrupted studies of local students abroad. It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to contributing positively to student development and ensuring their participation in the nation’s progress.
