The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has recovered over MVR 182 million owed to the Maldivian government.

This comes in the wake of a publicised effort to collect outstanding dues from local employers. On July 24th, the Ministry released a list of employers who owed more than MVR 100,000 in expatriate quota fees and related fines. Following the publication, the Ministry reported that many of the liable parties promptly began making payments to settle their debts.

In a statement on X, the Ministry confirmed that it has so far collected MVR 182,954,572 in expatriate quota fees, fines, and other dues since the release of the list.

During the recent Independence Day commemorative ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed the nation, revealing that the state is owed MVR 13 billion. He assured that his administration is committed to recovering these funds.

Muizzu also criticised the previous government for its failure to collect billions of rufiyaa legally owed to the state, including MVR 513 million in outstanding land lease payments.

In response to Muizzu’s remarks, various government bodies have intensified efforts to recover the amounts owed, reflecting the administration’s broader commitment to ensuring financial accountability.
