Gov’t Restricts Travel Through Gulhifalhu-Thilafushi Channel for Bridge Construction
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has issued an advisory against travelling through the channel between Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi as pillar installation for the Thilamale’ Bridge is scheduled to commence this week.
In a statement posted on X yesterday, the ministry confirmed that work on the Male’-Thilafushi link project will begin on Thursday. As a result, the channel will be closed from that day onwards, with all travel through the area restricted until further notice.
The ministry also reiterated that the Male’-Vilimale’ and Vilimale’-Gulhifalhu channels remain closed due to ongoing bridge development work, with restrictions on travel through these routes continuing.
The Thilamale’ Bridge project, a key infrastructure initiative, has progressed significantly. Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib stated in October that 45.82% of the project had been completed.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who initially projected the bridge’s completion for 2026, has expressed his commitment to expediting the project, aiming for completion by early next year.
