The Local Government Ministry has unveiled the criteria for the selection of islands earmarked for the ambitious project to erect new council offices across 50 islands.

This initiative was first introduced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the previous month.

During a visit to HDh. Makunudhoo in February, President Muizzu highlighted the dire conditions of numerous council buildings, many of which were in a state of severe disrepair.

Addressing the need for action, President Muizzu pledged to kickstart a significant project this year to construct new council offices. He outlined that given the absence of budgetary provisions for the project this year, it would be funded through an investor financing model.

On Wednesday, the Local Government Ministry released detailed standards and point-based criteria for the selection of 50 councils to be constructed under a contract finance policy.

The criteria assign 20 points each for factors such as population size, the condition of existing buildings, and available resources. Additionally, 10 points each are designated for the provision of workspace for councilors, administrative staff, and the Women’s Development Committee.

Councils that have been recipients of the Local Government Authority (LGA)’s Kangathi Awards will be awarded an additional 10 points.

The Local Government Ministry has extended an invitation for feedback on the proposed standards, with the deadline set for 1:00 pm on March 28th.
