The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that the government has communicated through four official documents with India as part of the process of withdrawing Indian troops from the Maldives.
According to Adhadhu media, the Ministry confirmed the exchange of four documents and the occurrence of ten official meetings thus far in connection with the withdrawal of Indian troops.
While the government initially reported the presence of 77 troops in the country, subsequent updates suggested a potential variation in the figures. Chief spokesperson Mohamed Shaheeb addressed concerns about national security, stating on the 28th of this month that the current number of Indian troops posed no threat.
Addressing uncertainties surrounding troop numbers, Shaheeb emphasised that relevant institutions are actively investigating, and as of now, no indications of a threat to national security have been reported.
The responsibility for overseeing the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives lies with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who made this a central promise during his presidential campaign.
The commitment was reportedly affirmed during a meeting between Muizzu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of COP-28. However, when pressed for further details by journalists, the President did not provide additional information.
