Gov’t Spends Over MVR 85 Million on Free Degree Programme

The government has disbursed more than MVR 85.48 million so far this year under its free degree programme, according to the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development.
The initiative aims to make higher education more accessible to Maldivian students by removing financial barriers and encouraging degree-level studies. The programme is also intended to strengthen the national workforce in sectors with high labour demand.
According to data shared by the Ministry, 1,100 new students have enrolled in the programme and are receiving financial assistance this year. A total of 8,086 students are currently pursuing their degrees under the scheme, comprising 5,047 women and 3,039 men.
Meanwhile, 2,068 students have graduated from the programme so far this year. Since the current administration assumed office in November 2023, the government has spent MVR 235.84 million on the initiative.
Over the past 19 months, 3,888 students have newly enrolled in the programme, while 5,412 students have completed their studies and graduated.
