“Magey Saafu Raajje” is a five-year plan to improve waste management and environmental cleanliness in the Maldives sustainably. The policy sets out 12 key objectives, including comprehensive island waste management, promoting greener and environmentally friendly practices, and seeking private sector assistance to enhance these efforts.

At the ceremony, Minister Thoriq stressed the vital importance of providing sustainable, environmentally friendly waste management facilities to all Maldivian islands. He reiterated that the new policy would strengthen efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of poor waste management.

Additionally, the minister underscored the need for strategic measures to hold those involved in the export and import of goods accountable for waste management. The policy introduces “Accident Producer Responsibility,” targeting a reduction in waste generated by imports related to the tourism industry.

Moreover, Minister Thoriq confirmed the establishment of a waste management centre in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, which will process 500 tonnes of waste daily using an environmentally friendly system. He cautioned, however, that 700 tonnes of waste are currently transported to Thilafushi each day, and without robust measures, this figure could rise to 1,000 tonnes within the next two to three years.

The minister also noted that the government is enhancing the waste management system in cities and larger islands through Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
