The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) will begin procuring fish in Fuvahmulah City this August, with plans to maintain ongoing purchases thereafter.
The initiative follows discussions between MIFCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Rtd Brigadier General Farhath Shaheer, and the Fuvahmulah City Council. The company also confirmed that the fish processing centre currently under construction in the city is scheduled for completion and operation within the year, ensuring processed fish products will be available locally.
For years, fishermen in the Maldives have encountered difficulties in selling their catch due to inadequate purchasing infrastructure in several regions. MIFCO is expanding its operations to address these challenges by sourcing fish from a broader range of locations.
Last week, the company announced plans to commence direct fish exports from Addu City next month. This change will eliminate the need to transport fish to Huvadhoo Atoll before export, while also aiming to increase the value of fish processed within Addu City by the end of the year.
