Gov’t to Boost Renewable Energy Share to 33% by 2028

The current administration has pledged to substantially increase renewable energy’s share in the energy mix to 33% by 2028, in a stride towards sustainable energy practices.

This commitment was reiterated during COP 28 in November-December 2023, underscoring the nation’s dedication to combating climate change.

To honour this pledge and chart a course towards a more sustainable energy future, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy convened a workshop in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This workshop focused on updating the ADB energy roadmap initially published in 2020.

The workshop, graced by esteemed experts from various sectors of the energy industry, aimed to address crucial aspects of the Maldives’ energy landscape. It commenced with an opening statement from H.E Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Sujata Gupta, Director of Energy at ADB.

Minister Ibrahim emphasized in his opening statement that the Energy Road Map will thus serve as a guide to help the Maldives shift its energy sector and broaden the scope of its key economic activities.

One of the highlights of the event was the launch ceremony for the Accelerating sustainable system development using Renewable Energy – ASSURE project, a ground-breaking initiative aimed at furthering sustainable energy practices in the Maldives. This ceremony was jointly officiated by Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, and Mr. Jaimes Kolantharaj, Senior Energy Specialist at ADB.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in insightful discussions and presentations, delving into topics such as the targets and challenges of a just energy transition, the solarization of inhabited islands and resorts, and strategies for promoting inclusivity and social benefits. 

Parallel discussions explored enabling opportunities for renewables upscale, utilities strategies to achieve national targets, and avenues for private sector participation. Additionally, a panel discussion focused on mobilizing the country to meet its energy objectives, emphasising the collaborative efforts required across various sectors.

The collective insights and commitments made during this workshop represent a significant step forward in the Maldives’ journey towards a greener, more resilient future.
