The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) stated that the initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s key presidential pledge to provide a permanent solution to the national housing crisis.

To speed up ongoing projects, two 45,000-tonne hopper dredgers and one 11,000-tonne hopper dredger are scheduled to be brought into operation by October. HDC is working closely with relevant authorities to identify and address potential challenges to ensure uninterrupted progress on dredging works.

Dredging is currently underway in several key areas, including Hulhumalé Phase 3, Gulhifalhu, Giravaru Falhu, Uthuru Thila Falhu, and Rasmale’. The land reclamation planned for Rasmale’ is the largest in the Malé region to date and forms a major part of the government’s housing and urban development strategy.

The government has announced that 65,000 housing units, including both flats and land plots, will be developed once the dredging is complete.

In his first presidential address to Parliament in 2023, President Muizzu described his five-year term as the “golden age of housing” and reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the long-standing housing challenges faced by Maldivians.
