The government has announced plans to develop parking buildings in Malé City with assistance from India, as part of efforts to address the ongoing parking crisis in the capital.
In his Presidential Address to Parliament last Thursday, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that the government had decided to construct environmentally friendly parking buildings powered by renewable energy in four locations across Malé City. The project will be financed under India’s concessional funding.
The Malé City Council has already begun clearing the Maafannu and Henveiru cemeteries to facilitate the construction of these parking buildings.
Expanding parking options in Malé City is a key pledge of President Muizzu, which includes the development of multi-storey parking facilities.
In addition to the plans for Malé City, the government has also announced the construction of parking buildings in Hulhumalé. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has outlined a plan to build 15 parking buildings in Hulhumalé, providing a total of 6,000 parking spaces. The project is expected to be completed within two years.
