Gov’t to Develop Sports Fishing Harbours in Five Regions
The Maldivian government is preparing to launch the development of sports fishing harbours in five regions across the country, as part of efforts to diversify the fisheries sector.
The initiative was revealed by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, during a workshop focused on individuals involved in sports and recreational fishing.
Minister Shiyam said that the development of the sports fishing segment is a key part of the administration’s fisheries diversification strategy, with purpose-built harbours forming an essential component of the plan.
In response to the growing popularity of sports fishing among Maldivian youth, five locations have been selected for the establishment of dedicated sports fishing ports. These facilities are expected to include fish stalls, administrative offices for organising competitions, restaurants, cafes, shops selling fishing gear, and barbecue areas.
The Minister confirmed that the administrative process to open the projects to investors is currently ongoing. The government has shared its vision for these developments at various investment forums and fairs, and has already received proposals from interested parties.
Minister Shiyam expressed confidence that once developed, the harbours will be fully equipped to support sports fishing activities and will contribute to increased tourist arrivals, providing broader economic benefits.
