Gov’t to Establish Hazardous Chemical Management Facilities
The government is launching specialised facilities for hazardous chemical management across the country, with the first centre now operational in Addu City.
Effective management of hazardous chemicals is critical for public health, particularly in light of past incidents that have highlighted the consequences of insufficient oversight.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim noted the substantial volume of hazardous chemicals imported into the Maldives, emphasising the necessity of robust management systems. The Addu City facility will be operated by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), with an additional facility under construction in Vandhoo, Raa Atoll.
The Ministry of Environment is adopting a phased approach to ensure safe disposal practices nationwide, with further facilities planned for Thilafushi.
New regulations have been introduced to facilitate safe chemical disposal, addressing the serious health risks associated with improper handling. The Maldives is also committed to safe chemical management through its participation in the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which requires the gradual elimination of mercury-containing devices and adherence to environmentally sound disposal standards, supported by financial assistance under the treaty.
