MV+ News Desk | December 29, 2024

The government has announced plans to introduce psychiatry and speech therapy services in all atoll hospitals across the Maldives.

A circular issued by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim highlighted a growing concern over the rising prevalence of mental health conditions in the country. The minister stated that this increase has led to a troubling surge in cases of mental health issues, suicide, and disabilities.

Currently, psychiatry and speech therapy services are only available in hospitals in Malé and regional level-3 hospitals. The decision, finalised on Saturday, aims to extend these essential services to atoll hospitals to address the challenges faced by island residents in accessing mental health care.

The government hopes the expansion will reduce waiting times and improve access to psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, therapists, and social workers. The services will be introduced in level-2 hospitals to ensure broader availability for island communities.

The initial phase of this initiative is set to roll out early next year in Haa Alif Atoll Hospital, Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, Noonu Atoll Hospital, Baa Atoll Hospital, Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital, Faafu Atoll Hospital, Dhaalu Atoll Hospital, Thaa Atoll Hospital, Gaafu Alif Atoll Hospital, and Fuvahmulah Hospital.

This policy shift marks a significant step towards strengthening the mental health infrastructure in the Maldives and improving the well-being of communities across the nation.
