President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to increase the government allowance provided to single mothers, effective from the next fiscal year.
The declaration came during an interaction in the ‘Raees ge Javaabu’ series, a platform allowing direct communication between the public and the President via social media.
Fathimath Afiya Ali, a resident of Fuvahmulah City, queried the President on his administration’s policies regarding support for single mothers and orphan care. In response, Muizzu reiterated his electoral commitment to augmenting allowances for single mothers. However, he clarified that the forthcoming budget would accommodate the increment, rather than the current fiscal year’s allocation.
Muizzu refrained from disclosing specific figures regarding the proposed allowance adjustments.
Regarding orphan care, Muizzu affirmed ongoing efforts to provide assistance to orphans and neglected individuals within society. He pledged special initiatives to address the needs of these vulnerable groups moving forward.
As per current regulations, single parents receive a monthly government allowance of MVR 2,000. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration had revised policies to allow for incremental increases based on the number of dependents. Under the amended regulations, single parents with more than three children could receive a maximum allowance of MVR 3,000 monthly.
The revised system also stipulates an additional MVR 1,000 per child, up to a maximum of 10 children.
