Gov’t to Introduce Integrated Health Records System in Maldives
The government has announced the implementation of a new system to centralise all patient health records, which has been introduced in two atolls as a pilot project.
Health Minister Abdulla Khaleel made the announcement during a parliament session yesterday, in response to a query from Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad about efforts to improve public health in the Maldives. Khaleel highlighted the challenges faced by both patients and doctors due to the lack of a unified health records system.
The pilot project will be launched in Fuvahmulah and Baa Atoll. Khaleel stated that work is underway to expand the system to Dhaalu Atoll and other regions. He explained that having all patient information in one place would facilitate easier diagnosis and treatment, with the system also providing alerts for potential serious illnesses.
Furthermore, Khaleel noted that foreign assistance is being sought to establish an urban primary care system in the Malé area, aimed at expanding the public health sector. He elaborated on the benefits of this system, emphasising a holistic approach to strengthening primary healthcare.
Through the urban care system, several clinical activities will be undertaken, including monitoring children’s growth and other child health-related services. Special services for the elderly will also be provided, such as home visits for the bedridden, alongside the establishment of wellness centres.
Khaleel expressed the government’s goal to set up wellness centres in all cities and the capital islands of every atoll, enhancing the accessibility and quality of healthcare services across the Maldives.
