The Ministry of Transport announced that it will soon begin installing fare meters in taxis, aiming to enhance taxicab services and address current issues in the industry.

Deputy Transport Minister Ali Mohamed, speaking on PSM News programme “Raajje Miadhu,” stated that the ministry is prioritising the introduction of taxi meters. He confirmed that the necessary survey for this initiative has already been conducted.

“We have held stakeholder meetings in light of the survey, including with drivers, cabbies registered on ride apps, and taxi centres,” Ali said.

He emphasised the importance of introducing taxi meters to rectify the current challenges faced by the taxi industry.

“The Ministry is already working on the required framework for this, and with God’s grace, we intend to implement it promptly,” he added.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted that the survey findings indicated a public demand for such changes soon. He noted that drivers, taxi centres, and the ministry all recognise the need for these amendments.

Recently, the ministry revised taxi fare prices in the Greater Male’ Area. The revisions included fare rates for seven to ten-seater taxis and allowed additional charges for airport transfers on top of the fixed rates.
