The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced the reintroduction of vehicle domain issuance, set to begin next month.

This marks the resumption of a service that was previously suspended due to widespread concerns over counterfeit domains. The suspension followed findings by the previous administration that uncovered significant issues with fake domains.

These counterfeit domains, often featuring popular numerical combinations, had circulated widely, with the Ministry’s records showing over 700 fraudulent domains on the market. The discovery raised serious concerns about the integrity of the system and public confidence.

The current vehicle domain system uses three- or four-digit numbers, a format that has attracted substantial interest, particularly among younger Maldivians keen to personalise their vehicle registrations. Yesterday, the Ministry emphasised in a press release that this demand remains strong, with younger demographics especially eager to obtain unique identifiers.

Earlier this year, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen highlighted the scope of the counterfeit issue, noting that approximately half of the nation’s 1,400 vehicle domains were found to be fake.
