Government prepares to remove asphalt at Ameenee Magu western end

The government is preparing to remove the asphalt at the western end of Ameenee Magu and carry out redevelopment works to address recurring damage, according to its managing director Ibrahim Nazeem.

The Ameenee Magu redevelopment project was awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) for MVR 84.4 million during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The final segment of the road was completed two years ago under the current government.

Since then, the western end of Ameenee Magu has become one of the most heavily trafficked sections of the road, operating as a two-way route frequently used by a range of vehicles, including large double-decker buses.

The section behind the food court has previously developed potholes and surface deformation, with the asphalt buckling into a wave-like pattern. Following public concern, repair works were carried out in September last year, but the damage has since reappeared and worsened.

The deterioration has raised safety concerns for motorists, with both lanes showing significant buckling and uplift in multiple areas.

In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem said the stretch of road west of Ghiyasuddin School requires major repair works. He added that the corporation is currently in discussions with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and expects to begin repairs within two weeks.

Nazeem stated that the RDC aims to fully remove the existing asphalt and reconstruct the section in line with technical standards. He also noted that the work will be carried out to a higher quality to ensure long-term durability.
