The government has announced plans to resume the development of the water theme park in Hulhumalé, a long-awaited project aimed at enhancing recreational infrastructure in the area.

Addressing the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed confirmed the renewed focus on completing the water theme park and an adjacent children’s playground. He revealed that a Sri Lankan firm has been contracted to handle the design work for the park and its surroundings. Fazul also disclosed that additional land reclamation for the project is scheduled to commence next year, expressing confidence in the timely completion of the facility.

The USD 35 million project was initially approved in 2017. While some structural progress has been made, much of the development remains incomplete. The project was initially awarded to the Waterfront Hotel and Leisure Company, but delays led HDC to terminate the contract.

When first announced, the plans for the water theme park included a 50-room hotel and various attractions such as spiral slides, speed slides, family slides, pools, bumper boats, a water roller coaster, and a fountain square.

HDC’s renewed commitment to the project underscores its vision of Hulhumalé as a hub for modern urban living and tourism.
