Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced that the Maldives government will transfer all ice plants previously operated by FENAKA Corporation to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) by 15 February.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister Shiyam stated that the decision to place the ice plants under FENAKA had been a poor one.

He explained that the company lacked the necessary expertise and capacity to manage the facilities, as there were no engineers or refrigeration professionals involved in their operations. This, he said, had led to various technical issues, rendering many of the ice plants non-operational.

Some of the facilities were already out of service when the current government assumed office. However, Minister Shiyam noted that efforts have been made to restore their operations.

FENAKA had suspended ice plant operations last year, citing financial losses.
