Gov’t Unveils Hospital Development Plans for the Coming Year

Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel announced the plan for the initiation of several hospital development projects in the upcoming year, aimed at bolstering the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Minister Khaleel emphasised the pivotal role of expanding healthcare services through strategic infrastructure development and resource establishment. Highlighting the significance of these initiatives, he noted that the construction of a tertiary hospital in Gan, Laamu Atoll, is poised to notably enhance mental health services.

Among the upcoming projects, Minister Khaleel disclosed that the commencement of the Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital’s development is imminent. Simultaneously, progress is underway in formulating plans for a cancer hospital in the Greater Male’ Region, with secured funding. 

The construction of Villimale’ Hospital by a Chinese contractor has already commenced, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities.

Addressing the gaps in services across atoll hospitals, Minister Khaleel shared that efforts are underway to establish laboratories on 64 islands, underscoring the critical importance of laboratory services in healthcare delivery. 

Expressing confidence in the positive impact of these initiatives, he affirmed that they will address various challenges faced by the health sector.

In addition to infrastructure development, Minister Khaleel outlined the government’s broader healthcare strategy, including plans to enhance human resources and promote medical tourism in the Maldives.
