The arrest warrant applications were submitted to the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the ICC in relation to the ongoing situation in the State of Palestine. Chief Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC called for accountability for Netanyahu and Gallant, citing continued atrocities against Palestinians.

In a statement, the President’s Office condemned Israel’s actions as a blatant disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law, describing them as “continuous aggression and genocidal acts.” The office further noted that these actions have resulted in a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.

President Muizzu, in a post on social media remarked that the ICC’s application represents a significant step towards justice for the Palestinian people. He emphasised that no country is above international law and stressed the need for accountability for those committing war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories.

As a State Party to the Rome Statute, the Maldives has expressed confidence in the ICC Prosecutor’s Office’s evidence, which they believe demonstrates that Israel has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. President Muizzu affirmed the Maldives’ commitment to supporting Palestine in the international arena.

The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I, consisting of a three-judge panel, will review the arrest warrant applications and decide whether to issue the warrants. Given that Israel is not a member state of the ICC, it is unlikely that Netanyahu and Gallant will be arrested if the warrants are issued. However, such warrants would restrict their international travel and could further isolate Israel diplomatically.

Since October 7th, 2023, ongoing attacks from Israel have resulted in the deaths of 35,562 Palestinians.
