Launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on December 18, the project serves as a crucial precursor to the government’s expansive RasMale’ development initiative.
The dredging efforts, undertaken by Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCC) in the Fushidhiggaru area, aim to create 1,150 hectares of land—triple the combined expanse of Hulhumale’ Phase I and Phase II. As part of the collaboration, CMCC will receive 60 hectares of land in Fushidhiggaru and an additional 10 hectares in Hulhumale for a duration of 99 years in exchange for their dredging services. This strategic arrangement ensures that neither the state nor Urbanco will bear any financial burden associated with the project.
President Muizzu has pledged to complete the dredging of the entire 1,150 hectares within eight months from the project’s commencement. During his presidential campaign, the President outlined a plan to develop 11,900 plots of land and construct 26,000 flats in the designated area.
While the government had initially allocated MVR 400 million for the project in the upcoming year’s budget, parliamentary decisions led to the redistribution of funds to alternative projects.
