Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital has introduced speech therapy services, marking the first time such care has been available at an atoll-level hospital. Previously, speech therapy was only offered at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and Addu Equatorial Hospital.

The new service in Dhidhdhoo was established through a government initiative, supported by the Dhidhdhoo Dhiggaa Foundation in securing a qualified therapist. The hospital stated that the service would significantly reduce difficulties for individuals who previously had to travel to access care.

Registration for speech therapy at Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital is now open through a QR code shared on the hospital’s social media pages. Around 30 people registered on the first day. The service is available to people of all ages and is offered daily except on Fridays.

Speech therapy is most commonly sought for children with speech difficulties. The launch of services in Dhidhdhoo will allow residents in the region to access treatment more conveniently within their atoll.
The hospital acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Health, the Island Council, the Atoll Council, and the constituency’s Parliament Member in establishing the service.

Efforts are also underway to introduce speech therapy services in Noonu Atoll. Speech and occupational therapy are considered vital for children with developmental challenges, but the Maldives continues to face difficulties due to a shortage of qualified professionals in the field.
